Why should I join a home exchange?

The three most compelling reasons to become a home exchanger are money, space, and an opportunity to "live like a local".

Money:
At least 20 percent of a travel budget is spent on lodging. This goes much higher, of course, in prime locations. Restaurant bills are decreased or even eliminated, if desired. Some exchangers even throw in an automobile. Also sometimes you save on entertainment with items like free internet access, use of bikes, DVDs to watch, gamerooms, etc.

Is it safe to let a stranger stay in my home?

It is extremely rare to have any problems during a home exchange.
Personal communication via email and telephone, or internet voice over IP with the other party is key. Work out the details of the exchange with the other party.  Some members create an agreement and both sign this.  Some members book flights for mutual home exchanges on a specific date and email each other the flight information.  Some members have a friend stop by to collect the mail or stop by to ask the guests if everything is ok and if they need anything.
